The 1956 United States presidential election was held on November 6, 1956. The election was a contest between Republican nominee Dwight D. Eisenhower, the incumbent President, and Democratic nominee Adlai Stevenson, who had previously ran against Eisenhower in the 1952 presidential election. Eisenhower secured 457 electoral votes to Stevenson's 73. Eisenhower won the popular vote by over 9 million votes.
