On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed S.475 - Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. The bill established Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19, as a legal public holiday. The bill was passed in the U.S. House by a vote of 415-14 on June 16, 2014, and passed by Unanimous Consent in the U.S. Senate on June 15, 2021. Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln two and a half years earlier.
