WATCH: President Biden signs the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

On June 25, 2022, President Biden signed S.2938 - Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law. The bill provides measures to help reduce gun violence following the deadly mass shootings that claimed the lives of 10 people at Tops Friendly Markets on May 14, 2022, in Buffalo, New York, and 21 people in the third-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, in Uvalde, Texas. The bill passed the U.S. House by a vote of 234-193 and the U.S. Senate by 65-33.

 

Key provisions:

  • The bill increases background check requirements for persons under 21 years of age.

  • The bill provides $250 million in funding for community-based violence prevention initiatives.

  • The bill provides $300 million in funding through the STOP School Violence Act to increase school safety measures and violence prevention efforts.

  • The bill provides $750 million in funding for states to implement crisis intervention services.
